Free is a serious argument and we will not dismiss it
AssetTiger's free tier covers a real asset count with real functionality. For an organisation that has never had a register, moving from a spreadsheet to AssetTiger is a genuine improvement at no cost, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
If a list of what you own, where it is and what it cost solves your problem, that is a complete answer and you should take it.
When a register stops being enough
The limitation is not the depth of the register, it is the lifecycle around it. Four moments tend to expose it.
**A dispute.** Something does not come back. The register holds a name, but there is no signature, no handover date and no condition record. A name in a field is not evidence of acceptance, and everyone involved discovers that at the worst possible time.
**A departure.** Somebody leaves and nobody can produce the list of what they hold, so recovery becomes an investigation during the week there is least time for one. Departures are the most concentrated source of unrecovered equipment there is.
**An audit.** Finance, an insurer or a grant body asks for a verified count. A list of what you believe you own is not a record of what you have physically verified, on a date, by a named person, with the discrepancies attached. Producing the second from a tool that offers only the first means a clipboard.
**A repair-or-replace decision.** Is this still under warranty, is there an AMC on it, what has it already cost in repairs, and what is it worth on the books now? Those four facts decide the spend, and a flat register holds none of them.
Mobile and integration
Adoption follows convenience. If updating the register means returning to a computer, it does not happen, and a register that is six weeks stale is not a control.
Stackroom's app is offline-first: scans, checkouts and returns record on the device and sync later, so a basement or a rural site is not a blocker.
The other practical limit is integration. Once asset data needs to reach finance, a helpdesk or an onboarding process, an API stops being a nice-to-have. AssetTiger does not offer one; Stackroom's REST API and webhooks are available from Pro.

Does Stackroom have a free tier too?
Yes, with unlimited users. It is intended for genuinely getting started rather than as a demo, so you can run a real checkout before deciding anything.
Can we move our existing data across?
Yes. Export to CSV and import. Serial numbers, categories, locations and purchase values carry over, so history is not lost in the move.
What is the single biggest difference day to day?
Signed handovers. Recording who has something and being able to prove they accepted it are different things, and the second is what changes behaviour. The runner-up is offboarding: everything a leaver holds, as a list, closing into an asset clearance certificate.

How long does switching actually take?
